Unforgiven and Mirrors

If texts serve as windows to the past for historians and serve as "stories that never happened but always happens" to literary critics, then, for cultural studies practitioners, texts serve as mirrors.

Mirrors help us see ourselves better. Many stories in the Bible serve as mirrors. They resonate with our experiences. They echo our joys and our pains. They inform our decisions and our struggles. Films serve a similar purpose.

For this particular exercise, the class will watch the award-winning film, Unforgiven. Please respond to the following questions after you watch the film: (1) Who among the characters did you identify with and why? (2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific (3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo? (4) What key themes resonate in the film? (5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?

1.Who among the characters did you identify with and why? Answer: I can identify more to Will. Will was engaged in assassin practically because of his need for money. He got the nerve too because of his past experience, though it was not clarified much in the movie. Once there, I can see that he was a good person, for he was driven more to the fact that his targets did some gross acts to a whore, Delilah buy cutting her face. I can see that in between our sinning, an innate righteousness is still manifested. This is showed in his not engaging sexually to Delilah in spite of the chance “free one” that she offered him. He remained faithful to his deceased wife. He was a responsible father to his two children who would do everything to raise them – in fact even to grab that price for an assassin.
2.In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific. Answer: One obvious conflict of the story that mirrors reality is Will’s acceptance to the offer for assassination. We know he was a good man. In fact on the event of killing Davey, he still felt pity and told Davey’s friend to give him water. Evil lurks in our society. But if we closely take a look who these people are, we find out that they are sometimes professing Christians or people who have knowledge about God. The thing is that, poverty or dire needs could push any of us to commit sin.
3.The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo? Answer: A parable uses an illustration, image or story that will portray reality. In this movie, it portrays the injustice or impassive conduct of the police officers who should have dealt the crime with utmost regard but just fined the perpetrators with some ponies. It becomes subversive in the sense that the ugly behavior was done by the supposed good men, men who were supposed to carry out justice and peace of the community but to this movie, even hindered them. Another one is the assassination plot. In this movie, it was something that is not concealed. It was like a job opening that any interested party may just take in.
4.What key themes resonate in the film? Answer: a) Prostitution is legal. b) Injustice system
5.What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you? Answer: Theological metaphor: The message that the movie strongly conveys to me is that the justice of God will always follow us wherever we are. Nothing can be hidden from God and that we have to pay them sooner or later.

(1) Who among the characters did you identify with and why? (2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific.
(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?
(4) What key themes resonate in the film? Paghihiganti, pang-aabuso, pagiging tao, katapatan sa pagiging kaibigan o pagiging totoong kaibigan.
(5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?

(1) Who among the characters did you identify with and why?
(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific.
(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?
(4) What key themes resonate in the film?
(5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?

(1) Who among the characters did you identify with and why?
I think the character that I can identify myself with is William Munny, when he was badly beaten by the notorious chief sheriff of the town, he never thinks of revenge, he manages to be cool and patient to the sheriffs that gave him a remarkable welcoming to that town. But when his friends was also beaten and put into death, he was there to seek revenge and justice as a sign of protesting to what those sheriffs done to his friend.

I myself is identified to such behavior because, I am really sure to myself of letting or understand or tolerate things happens to me although sometimes it is not favorable, but when somebody hurting my love ones, I can surely risk my life or courageous face all the circumstances just to protect them, seek justice for them and even do a revenge for them. Because I think my life is for them and they were my life.

(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific
William Munny’s behavior towards the death of his dear friend, is a reality of our nature being, in fact even a coward animal choose to fight back when their young was taken away from them. Same with us, there is no enough reason for us to understand when our loves ones were taken away from us, since they were our defining factor why we exist and live therefore our lives time and space circulate from them. Without them we can also feel and defines our selves as nothing and no reason to exist for. Such attachment to one another is more than choice or freedom that is how nature or the natural time (the succession of contrast) touches, molds and blooms our lives.

(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?
By knowing William Munny’s personality on a whole rounded viewing, he is a bad criminal, but a trusted and faithful husband, a true friend and a gentleman. This realities subverts the idea that a criminal is always a bad one, a criminal is not capable in doing good, Bill is a criminal before but he manages to change, this means changes happens to everyone, it is only our prejudices never change, it was fixated, we tend to believe the saying, first impression last. But in the different circumstances of life, to be change or to change is always available, and some people if not many, grab it. The mother-in-law is an example of a belief system that non-accommodating, fixated and exclusive.

(4) What key themes resonate in the film?
The unforgiving heart of the mother-in-law towards Munny remain unresolved, the mother-in-law looks at Munny in one area or one angle, she never tried to discover who William Munny is as a person, as a known criminal, as a man, friend, mentor, as a partner etc. We most of the times judges people from a single area or one angle point of view. We should learn the Christ way of accepting and accommodating people, let us accept them as person, person with a lots of masks, Jesus offered first acceptance not judgment.

(5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?
I John 3:16 encourages us to the doctrine of self offering, since Jesus gave his life for others, John urges us to also offers our selves for fellow. This was very obvious from Bill (Morgan Freeman), he protects his friends, even though death is the cost of it. Bill is Biblical.

1.Who among the characters did you identify with and why?

i can identify to the character of the "Kid" who indirectly told Ned and Will that he already killed five persons just to tell the two that he is not coward. Nevertheless, there are times in our life pretending that we are very able to tell others we are strong and courageous; that we, as pastor, telling and trying to convince others that we can defeat all even thou on our face obviously can't hide because the facial expression agreeing on what is telling about. in other words, we can possibly wear the mask of couragious but the truth we are not. in the same vein, we are using the temporal mask of bravery but in truth we are resisting the fact that we first need the words of acceptance to enable us to be empowered and can do good things.

2.In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific.

-The behaviour of the sheriff name, Bill and Munny William enlighten more the mirror of reality. For in the condition of government or shall we say a town, there is always holding the governmental power for his territorial area that unfortunately possibly can abuse it to the fact that he (like Bill) use the power to opress and take advantage to the community. From the movie, Bill (the police officer)is the power and the authority therefore he control the community. on the other hand, William MUnny is also the enlighten the mirror of the reality. He is the trigger of the community who killed Bill physically. He is like "Ang Probinsiyano" (a tagalog movie who wanted to have revenge for his family). or the movie called Robinhood to the fight justice and freedom. William together his companion travelled through their horse and live in the desert for so long; thinking and preparing conditioning themselves just for the peace fot the community and for eradicating the poison of abusing within the community.
3.The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?

-The parable is an excellent material of demonstrating, redefining and understanding the reality. nevertheless, in the very meaningful movie "unforgiven", it shows the various problems of the community, like power struggle, peace and injustices. in addition, it also shows and help the condition of the inward self of an individual by examining ang diagnosing the whole content of parable.

4. What key themes resonate in the film?
1. Revenge is restless,
2. Revenge triggered unforgiving heart

5. What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?

-Gun symbolizes power which can be used to help people and also to kill people. on the other hand, Gun can be triggered for anti-life and can be triggered for defend life. Power should not be abused by the person; and people should be reminded that power is design by God given by God not oppress people but to have the benefit for the people.

(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific

(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?

(4) What key themes resonate in the film?

(5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?

1) Who among the characters did you identify with and why?

In the film “Unforgiven” I can identify myself with the leading actor Clint Eastwood who played the role of William Munny. At first he was seen as an ordinary man, having simple life and sometimes viewed as coward. But as he committed himself for a battle or a mission, he pulled all his power within his being and make the most out of himself in order that he would succeed. Well he was nobody in Kansas doing farming and raising his kids up. A typical man with a simple living. However, due to “calling” though reluctant at first, he conquered his fear and face his mission even if the risk was so high. That is why although he was in the midst of gunfighters loaded with arms, he managed to compose himself and survive. In Filipino there is a saying, “Ang unang masindak siyang talo.” The first one who is frightened shall lose. William did not allow fear to control him but rather he controlled his fear.

(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific

The film happens in reality. I’ve known people whose job was like Will or Ned. Well when people hear that one person is a hired killer, the initial reaction is that he is really bad. But there are good things in criminals too. They care for their family, they know respect people, they serve the community etc. It’s just that in one point of their lives they just lose hopes and put their trust on guns rather than depending in the justice of God by doing good. Also Little Bill in the film portrays the abusive undue system of justice. The laxity of it and its unfavorable decisions and implementation make it parallel to the story. Thus, extortion, bribery, black mail arise both in the films and in reality

(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?

In our norms, killing is a crime except for those armed people of the government like police and soldiers. The film was subversive because the murderers are the protagonists while the sheriff and his people were the villains. It is not the other way around.

(4) What key theme resonate in the film?

Power, money and sex go together and they will always be the part and parcel of every generation and every film.

(5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?

The idea of having been called to do something arises in the film. There is a goal to reach and a mission to accomplish. Whether good or bad person, each of us has something to do with this life. There should be deeper meaning of it. Jesus’ was made flesh for a purpose, healed the sick and reached the needy for a purpose, he taught his disciples for a purpose, and he died in the cross for a purpose. But unlike William, Jesus lived for a good, godly, just, and righteous purpose.

1. Who among the characters did you identify with and why?
I will fairly identify with the women who work in the Greely. These women portray the picture of those who calls for a better life. They have these faces expressing the want to improve life, to become free and hopes to settle with a man/family who will give them a good name, children to mold and become potential people in the society. This maybe the very purpose of life, to live and portray our role as member of this society.
2. In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific.
The film mirrors the reality of corruption, prostitution and power grabbing, no matter how past the years have gone, these reality has lived a long time and would remain to be our battling item and challenge to consider.
3. The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?
A Parable is meant to give meaning, reveal truths to picture life and the message of the Reign of God. The film in the same way has showcased the norm and status quo of a society and the truths of life. A world where people are forced to live a life according to the power of persons who are in position. A time and place where people tend to become silent while some in authority who are called to serve and protect choose to do the other way. This is a status where possible rendition of resistance is ever possible.
4. 4.What key themes resonate in the film?
The film resonates a Messiahnic capture of a person who is willing to pay for the prize, while giving justice for a life that is meant to live for a peaceful atmosphere.
5.What Theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?
I will take up from the statement declared by one of the protitutes after what happened to the English man. she said: No One will ever visit this place again.
This is a metaphorical verse to retell our life as a nation. If we do not revisit, regain our heritage, go back from where we are really intended to become, a country, people and nation which serves and live a life which speaks of our meaning then and only then will we be able to maintain at least a place to live better. Unforgiven is a word which described Will's and our life which is lived in chaos.

To some extend, I can somehow identify with Schofield Kid. Despite his weaknesses such as bad eyesight, never killed anyone before, yet he took up the courage to kill the bad cowboy. Well, his primary intention of killing was for reward money so that he can have “spectacles and fancy clothes”. But when he actually killed the bad guy, he realized that it was not right to take somebody life just because they are bad. Most of the times when I got angry, I used to think and do things which I regret later.

(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific
The harsh reality of the past. No matter how much we try to get ride of our past, it take just one good invitation to get back to the same old way. And sometimes it was the situation that brought us back to that old ways. The film also reflects the reality that some people are not really bad as it appear. Schofield Kid is not bad as what he claim to be, Will don't look “no meaner-than-hell, cold-blooded, damn killer” but actually he was and he is, Little Bill seems to be taking good care of the town but he was not. Appearance is deceptive.

(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?
While I was younger than now, my aunty used to tell me about this parable that pig loves "bathing" in the mud and it will go back every time the occasion comes up. Well, I thought it is a Biblical parable! Must be there somewhere in the four gospel, I am trying to find one day. But the point here is that “Unforgiven” also reflects something similar to this parable.
But it is subversion to the tradition, norm, and status-quo because there real change can be happen in a person. If we are to resign to the proposition that a person can not be totally change from his old way as it is depicted in the movie, then we don’t have hope to become someone worthy because we have “our past”.

(4) What key themes resonate in the film?
While the title of the movie itself reflects the main theme – unforgiven. Other keys themes resonates in the movie are “killer is always a killer”, “power of the powerless – in regards to women in the movie”. It was the power of the powerless that kill the bad guy and eventually killing of all bad guys in the town. For Schofield Kid “reality is different from “wild” imagination.

(5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?
We can see raging wolf in sheep’s clothing. Will is taking law into his own hand because the law of the town could not bring any justice. The story also depicts evil for an evil, in order to saves some lives; they have to kill some other lives. Thereby the chain of evil is continuing. Will, Ned and Schofield Kid were saviors for the women but it turn out to be bloody at the end. Interestingly, such were images of the savior in many of the Psalms. Destroying the enemies, no matter how bloody it appears. In this way, the movie also somehow has the biblical theme.

Reflection on the Film Unforgiven
1. Who among the characters did you identify with and why?
In the story, I can identify with the experience of the children of Will who were left behind in there young ages and learn to survive with their own. Despite the reality that these children were not reasonable to be left on their own, they were force to assume responsibilities that they were supposed not to do in the absence of their parents. I can say that these two children, though difficult, had survived even without the reward money sent by Will.

2. In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific.
In pursuing personal advancement, especially in economic status, there were people who were suffering due to too much responsibilities left and losing the company of their love one. The departure of Will with his children is a present day reality that most people, especially Filipinos, who left their home/household to other places or countries in order to achieved their desire maybe because of lack of opportunities that made them hardly to survive.

3. The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?
The presence of injustice and violence to those who are helpless by those in power and able personalities can be the established norms in the society presented in the movie. The powerful or ruling classes forced the people to submit to them. However, justice was not serve to those who are harassed by the ruling class by bribing the people who enforces the law. The coming of the three actors in the limelight through the petitions of those who are suffering from violence and injustice subvert the tradition, norms and the status quo by enforcing the rule of law with their hands especially Will as the main actor. Justice and peace was achieved by the help of outside force.

4. What key themes resonate in the film?
The struggle towards achieving a fair society is the main theme of the story. The suffering people were liberated from tyrannical rule of Little Bill and the ruling class. Thus, salvation comes in the town through their hero (messiah) in the person of Will.

5. What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?
The film invokes the necessity of social liberators or social actors that will transform a corrupted society into a society of love, peace and justice. Every person can do something for a desirous society. Jesus lived or articulated a life that helps to diminish social unrest through several ways that upholds the integrity of living. He has to challenge the status quo into a more peaceful and livable society.

Unforgiven Movie Reflection
1.Who among the characters did you identify with and why? Answer: I can identify the character of William Munny. His early life he was a violent killer and thief. He married Claudia, unfortunately for him and his little children, his wife died three years prior. He was a poor pig farmer, with two little children. His life is very heard to raise his motherless child. Because times are heard, and he greatly is trying to support his children. When two rowdy, cruel cowboys gets angry at a whore and, with the help of his buddy, beat up and cuts up one of a prostitutes face. The other “women” of the establishment, pool their money( $ 1000) and start telling everybody that they’re offering a reward to whoever kills these two young cowboys. An opportunity comes to him in the name of ‘The Schofield Kid.’ He gives him a chance to be his partner and have him help on a bounty. Knowing that the money could help his family out, Munny finally decides to leaves his farm and children, and hunts them down, along with the other gunmen (Kid and Ned Logan) out to do the deed and collect the bounty. Once there, I can see that he was a good person for his children, and he was a very faithful for his dead wife. After a long way through wet, frigid weather, Munny was ill and nursed by his friends and the prostitutes Delilah. He has a good chance to sex with Delilah in spite of the chance “free one” that she offered him. He remained faithful to his dead wife. He was a responsible father to his two children who would do everything to raise them – in fact even to grab that price for an assassin. He gave all of his life for his children and for the freedom of prostitutes in Big Whiskey Wyoming, where in a small “billiards” saloon.
2.In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific. Answer: I think the film examines the morality, and repercussions, of violence and death. Once obvious conflict of the story that mirrors reality is William Manny acceptance to the offer for assassination. We know he was a good man. Because of our survival or stomach we will do everything(Evil work) in our lives. But if we closely take a look who these people are, we find out that they are sometimes professing Christians or people who have knowledge about God. The thing is that, poverty or dire needs could push any one of us to commit sin. It is the reality of the films.
3.The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo? Answer: Our Lord Jesus Christ used many parables and illustration for telling the truth of the reality of his life time situation. The parable uses an illustration, image or story that will portray reality. In this movie, the two cowboys fellow slashes a prostitute’s face, and the venomous local sheriff, Little Bill, fines the cowboy and his friend seven ponies, payable to the prostitute’s pimp and saloon owner Skinny. In this movie, it portrays the injustice or immoral conduct of the police officers who should have dealt the crime with utmost regard but just fined the perpetrators with some ponies. 4.What key themes resonate in the film? Answer: In this movie the key themes: unforgiven, Prostitution is legal, Injustice, and immoral conduct system of the police of the officers and powerful and powerless.
5.What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you? Answer: Theological metaphor: In Galatians 6:4 “ A man reaps what he sows,” and Prov.22:8 “He who sows wickedness reaps trouble.” The message that the movie strongly conveys to me is that the two cowboys and Chairman Bill and his armies reaps their immoral conduct. The justice of God always follow us.

1.Who among the characters did you identify with and why?

In the film “Unforgiven” I can identify myself with the leading actor Clint Eastwood who played the role of William Munny. At first he was seen as an ordinary man, having simple life and sometimes viewed as coward. But as he committed himself for a battle or a mission, he pulled all his power within his being and make the most out of himself in order that he would succeed. Well he was nobody in Kansas doing farming and raising his kids up.

2.In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific.

Munny is a man who has done evil, and tried to change his ways; when events and economic necessity drive him back towards his old ways of living, he has an incredible moral and spiritual struggle that he must undergo. I shan't spoil the movie by giving the resolution; let's just say that his actions are real and psychologically grounded. Eastwood the actor and Eastwood the director come together to forge a flawed, tragic human in Munny.

(1) Who among the characters did you identify with and why?

(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific

(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?

(4) What key themes resonate in the film?

3. Kung ano ang inutang syang kabayaran.

(5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?

Unforgiven flim reflection

1.Who among the characters did you identify with and why?
Ans. > I think the character that I can identify myself with the leading actor Clint Eastwood who played the role of William Munny. At first he was seen as an ordinary man, having simple life and sometimes viewed as coward. He never thinks of revenge and he manages to be cool and patient to the sheriffs that gave him a remarkable welcoming to that town. But when his friends was also beaten to death, he was there to seek revenge and justice as a sign of protesting to what those sheriffs done to his friend. He committed himself for a battle or a mission. Due to “calling” though reluctant at first, he conquered his fear and face his mission even if the risk was so high. That is why although he was in the midst of gunfighters loaded with arms, he managed to compose himself and survive. William did not allow fear to control him but rather he controlled his fear.

(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific.
Ans. > William Munny’s behavior towards the death of his dear friend, is a reality of our nature being, in fact even a coward animal choose to fight back when their young was taken away from them. The film also reflects the reality that some people are not really bad as it appear. Same with us, there is no enough reason for us to understand when our loves ones were taken away from us, since they were our defining factor why we exist and live therefore our lives time and space circulate from them. Without them we can also feel and defines our selves as nothing and no reason to exist for.

(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?
Ans.> A Parable is meant to give meaning, reveal truths to picture life and the message of the Reign of God. The film in the same way has showcased the norm and status quo of a society and the truths of life. The presence of injustice and violence to those who are helpless those in power and able personalities can be the established norms in the society presented in the movie. The powerful or ruling classes forced the people to submit to them. However, justice was not serve to those who are harassed by the ruling class by bribing the people who enforces the law. The coming of the three actors in the limelight through the and peace was achieved by the help of outside force. In our norms, killing is a crime except for those armed people of the government like police and soldiers.

(4) What key themes resonate in the film?
Ans.> While the title of the movie itself reflects the main theme – unforgiven. Other keys themes resonates in the movie are “killer is always a killer”, “power of the powerless – in regards to women in the movie”.
Ans.> The film invokes the necessity of social liberators or social actors that will transform a corrupted society into a society of love, peace and justice. Every person can do something for good and development of the society. Here, the story depicts evil for an evil, in order to saves some lives; they have to kill some other lives. Thereby the chain of evil is continuing. But, Jesus lived or articulated a life that helps to diminish social unrest through several ways that upholds the integrity of living. hindi ko matandaan kung sino ang pangalan niya, siya ang bespren ng bida. nakita ko sa isang tao kung paano bigyan ng halaga ang pagiging magkaibigan kapalit man nito ay buhay. a true friend is a treasure.

(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific

(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?

isang talinghaga:

“ UNFORGIVEN “

This film reflects to an unforgiven past experiences of the main characters which leads to plot of killings and revenge. Despite of these there was also faithfulness which overpower all these unforgiven past .

I. Who among the characters did you identify with and why?
I was identify with Claudia because I believed that a woman can cure or help a man she loves most to become a good and better person. Matt.I3:33 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough” It is the yeast message or the faith of a woman who has a great impact in others life especially those whom you love and loves you also.

2. The film mirrors a reality that a woman can create more violence than man or can influence others more than man. Even they were demoralized, downtrodden, rejected , marginalized by men, they can take violent revenge like a murder to what injustice done to them. In this film they help each other to hurdle money to pay for the killer who slash Delilah the woman. Even this days it was a reality that man overpowered woman but in the end a woman always triumphantly released from her misery and sufferings like Delilah she laugh for the goodness and care of her friends given to her.
In woman’s weakness and frailty she can influence man. In the case of Will even Claudia was dead still he become faithful to her in reverse to Ned he was unfaithful to his wife, he went with Will and uses a woman in the bar. In the end he change his mind not to go with Will but it was too late . When he departed alone he was chased by the cowboys and gave to Little Bill and whip him up to hisdeath.

3. The film has ben called a parable because this film in the end and in the beginning woman was included in the misery, struggle, the one who was slashed in the face laughs when she feels the love and concern of her friend. And even in the end Will visited again his wife tomb and if Claudia was alive or seen in the scene she laughs also for the faithfulness of her husband to her and their children.

4. What key themessage resonate in the films?
“ Unforgiven past and persons blotted by faithfulness and love “

5. What theological/religious /biblical/images/metaphors does the film conjure up to you.
Theologically God always forgives Matt.I8:2I Then Peter asked Jesus how often a brothers wrongs him forgave Jesus said seventy times seven times. The laugh of a woman like God in the end God has the last laugh. If Claudia live she also laughs because her husband remains faithful to her and their children.. On the last epilogue of the film said that Will prospered and live with her two children . For me behind the scenes which Mrs Ansonia Feathers did not saw has answered the question of a mother why her only daughter has married and loved a known thief and murderer man
who transforms his life in a good man and a father.

“Reflection Paper on Unforgiven Film”
(1) Who among the characters did you identify with and why?
(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific.
(3) The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo?
(4) What key themes resonate in the film?

(5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?

1. In many cases and situations, most people will identify themselves with Willy. If I reflect in religious aspects, when he decided to stop on his past life and changed, he then become born again, surrender his life to God and start do good things. But also same as many Christian, because of needs, sufferings, and problems tempted to turn back on their past life. That was what happened to Willy.

2. I probably used spirituality in mirroring the reality of the film. The term born again is simply means new life, the old life to new. It was happened that those who knows Christ and accept Him as Lord and Saviour suddenly applied the word born again and seems they are powerful , holy and free from temptation, but the reality the more we are closer to God , the more we are tempted.

3. The film destroy the thinking of the cowboys, that nobody can over power them, stronger and brave as they are. Every stranger in their place killed, jailed. But when Willy revenge, he broke their thinking.

4. Most criminal cases happened is because of poverty. They do things against their will. Willy tried to changed, to forget his past life, but because of the situation of the family it pushes him to do killings. Poverty could be the theme resonates in the film.

5. Money can be the metaphor the film conjures. There is saying money is the root of all evils thoughts, ideas, deeds, because of money people killed, hurt left families, corrupt, lies. Money is needed; it is good but be good stewards of the money entrusted to us.

Marilyn Manson said...

Who among the characters did you identify with and why? Answer: I can identify more to Will. Will engaged in assassin practically because of his need for money. Basically, kapag kumalam ang bituka, gagawin lahat para magkaroon ng laman ito, even in the expense of the life of others.
In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific. Answer: The reality that I found in the movie is that friends are friends. Walang iwanan, sama-sama kahit saan. Another is the injustice and in equality of men and women that time.
The film has been called a parable. Why? How does it subvert tradition, norms, and the status-quo? Answer: Oh yea, I agree with that. Parables are picture of a reality. And in the movie, it portrays the reality, not only that time but also in our time.
What key themes resonate in the film? Answer: a) Rampant Sex sale. b) Injustices
What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you? Answer: Theological metaphor: God is in control of everything. Whenever we are down, and seems life is so tough, God is there to help.

1. I can see myself to the wife of Ned. The first appearance in the entire movie is when Ned introduced her to Will Munny. Her characteristic is very limited. Nung paalis na sila Will at Ned, wala man lang siyang reaksyon.
3. Parable- it uses an illustration that portrays reality. Only a life lived for others are a life worthwhile. Will have been took the risk in order to attain justice for Ned. He has the courage to kill Bill; he’s not terrified to rock the boat. Bill is a notorious leader in Big Whiskey; everyone is scared but only Will has the guts to take vengeance for his friend Ned.
4. Prostitution and the prejudice scheme.
5. “Only a life lived for others are a life worthwhile”. If we would build on a certain foundation in friendship, we must love friends for their sake rather than for our own. Just like John 3:16, offering God’s son for our sake. What a sure foundation we have!

REFLECTIONS ON THE MOVIE ENTITLED “UNFORGIVEN”
(1) Who among the characters did you identify with and why?
While watching the film, I saw myself in the character of the mother of Claudia who immediately judged the negative personal background of Munny. Like her, I remembered my past days having the same feeling or attitude of looking at person’s negative points of life. I usually judged people easily as I look at them. These movies affirmed to me the value of the saying “don’t judge the book by each cover”. We need to look especially on the positive attitudes of persons. Sometimes we hardly accept anyone specially if he or she is not well-known to us; we choose only the people we want to appreciate and love. We damn our fellows instead of caring for them. Who are we to judge? No, we don’t have the right. We must not judge so that we will not be judged. Instead of judging we must learn to accept one another as Christ accepts and loves us even though we are not worthy. Instead of concentrating looking at the bad scenes of people’s lives, we must offer our lives to channels of love and agents of change.
(2) In what ways does the film mirror reality? Be specific.
The killing scenes presented on this story mirrors the reality of doing things with specific reasons or motives. One of the potential motives for murder is material gain. William Munny, the former outlaw, is now a middle-aged pig farmer he has two young children and infection is spreading among his pigs. During his time of crisis he was unexpectedly approached by a young braggart, the self styled “Schofield Kid”, who has been told to him that William Munny is “the worst—meaning the best known killer”. He has heard about the bounty for killing the two cowboys, and he wants Munny to join him in winning it. Munny at first denies his identity, partly because he fears the Kid is someone bent on revenge for something he did in the past, but also, clearly, because he wishes to disavow his past. He then tells the Kid that he is not the way he used to be. His wife, Claudia, taught him that his old ways were bad. After realizing the situation of his two children and his pigs, He had second thoughts, and decides to look for the Kid to join him on the bounty hunt. He looks rusty and awkward as he tries his gun and then fumblingly tries to get on his horse. Situations like these are very authentic in the whole world. One of the main reasons why there are countless of murders and crimes is due to crisis. People crave to live and so they do everything just to live in any way they can. Another reason is the fact of doing revenge for your loved ones in order to aim justice. Lastly, the film studies on how much a life is worth. Sometimes it is worthless and sometimes it is a major feature. A life isn't worth the same amount to each person. When a life is taken, it is the killer who decides how much it is worth by how much it affects him. Whether he just lets it slide (Munny and Little Bill) or kills someone and calls it a day. It is either you will kill or you will be killed.
(3) The film has been called a parable. Why?
Personally, I agree that the film is considered a parable because it tells about the reality of life. In life we encounter many things which are both evil and good but we are challenged to clearly look the world in its real situation for us to understand how to be a responsible to all the actions we take. We are free in this life but later on, we must not forget the accountabilities waiting for us.
(4) What key themes resonate in the film?
The themes of justice, law enforcement, corruption, revenge, honor, feminism and masculinity, mythic heroes vs. reality, the tainted gunfighter, and the central, brooding and complex message of the non-glamorous, painful nature of gunplay and violence are well-described and defined through this movie.

(5) What theological/religious/biblical images/metaphors does the film conjure up for you?
At the end of the move Will’s famous dialogue with the other character captured my mind. The other man says” I don't deserve this", while Will is pointing to him a gun. Will replied "Deserve's got nothing to do with it". For some reason, this line has become the definite answer to my question and to many peoples’ question as to why bad things are happening in this world. We ask “If there is God, why there are many bad things happening to us? Why good people die earlier than the many bad people around us? Yet, we are missing this point from this movie: deserve's got nothing to do with it. No one man is better than another, and because of that no man deserves terrible things to happen to him than another.
The fact is we are all sinners and all deserve bad things to happen to us, why do we deserve the love of God? Why do we deserve to inherit the kingdom of heaven? Well, deserve's got nothing to do with it; love does. It is because of God's love and caring that He forgives us and shows us how to love others. He set the example, now we are charged with showing it to the world. If we screw up, that's ok, keep trying because God will forgive you of your mistakes. Even the justice system may never forgive you, but God will. We may not deserve it, but deserve's got nothing to do with it.
Lastly, it reminds us again the message of God’s unconditional love for all of us. Though our sins are heavy as the world cannot bear it, God carries us, helps us stand and let us walk through life with his light held up on to shine our ways.
